Circa 2016; Our daughter’s third birthday was fast approaching; and her current obsession cooking! The Kitchenette- quintessential rite of passage for every child growing up.

Since these were the days before IKEA and the Little Tikes made their way to India, the only option we had were the bright plasticky Chinese play kitchen sets. Armed with all the research and a good budget, we ordered KidKraft from the USA. A month later it arrived, the excitement was palatable. But alas! Not only was it the wrong design and colour; a big piece was also broken!

The tears and anguish were real, not to mention the time and money lost.

Then came the lightbulb moment: I didn’t need to find the perfect toy, I could build it. Armed with a few sketches, a team of local carpenters, and a serious dose of 'parental determination,' we got to work. After a whirlwind three weeks of sawdust and big dreams, a masterpiece was born: a kitchen, a restaurant, and a café all rolled into one. For the next few years, our living room became the neighbourhood’s favourite headquarters for playdates, and seeing that spark of wonder in my daughter's eyes changed everything.

More importantly, it reignited my love for design and showed me how much joy a little bit of wood and a lot of heart could create.

That’s how our journey began with a simple question: What kind of play do we want our daughter to grow up with?

In a world which was filled with loud, quickly forgotten, plastic, are-you-sure this is safe for my child toys, we found ourselves craving something quieter, more intentional play that invited imagination, focus, and connection. Toys that didn’t rush childhood, but nurture it.

When life slowly returned to routine, Covid in 2020 brought a pause no one expected. With the world indoors and screens becoming an easy default, we found ourselves facing a challenge many parents know all too well how do we keep our children engaged, curious, and learning without gadgets?

The days were long, the house was full, and the need for meaningful play became very real. That’s when a long-dormant design spark was reignited.

We started scavenging turning cardboard boxes, random packaging and everyday odds and ends into a DIY arcade of games, toys, and puzzles.

Play became a process of making, testing, and imagining together. But the real breakthrough happened when I discovered Felt.

Soft, versatile, and endlessly inviting, Felt opened up a world of possibilities. We began designing activities that encourage little hands to explore, minds to wonder, and stories to unfold naturally without instructions, screens, or overwhelm.

Through countless scrappy prototypes, paper sketches, and later refined CAD designs, ideas began to take shape. Concepts evolved, details were refined, and what started as homemade creations slowly transformed into thoughtfully designed products we truly love.

At the end of the day, we aren’t just making toys; we’re reclaiming the magic of Free play. We know the 'screen struggle' firsthand because we lived it, too. That journey taught us that childhood should be a little more 'scrappy' and a lot more soulful—because you don’t need a charging cable to power an imagination, just the right designs and a bit of wonder.
